What is Endodontics?

An Endodontics is when a dentist performs root canal treatment to patients that experience severe decay to save their tooth and avoid any further damage to progress in the tooth’s root. Saving a dental pulp is essential since it holds the blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues of each tooth that is in charge of the tooth’s development.

Benefits of Endodontics

  • It is a pain-free procedure that leaves little discomfort compared to tooth extraction
  • Cost-effective procedure since it saves the teeth’s structure instead of having it extracted and replaced by dentures, bridges, or implants
  • It provides an aesthetically pleasing result
  • It eliminates the pain that the patients feel
  • Maintains the natural tooth structure
  • It can maintain the structure of the jaw bone
  • The procedure is safe and effective in preserving the tooth’s appearance and function
  • Quick and easy procedure

How does Endodontics work?

  • Anesthesia will be applied by the dentist to numb the area for the procedure by using a needle, the pain that the patient can feel is because of the infection and not because of the procedure.
  • An opening would then be created by the dentist through drilling to access the pulp in the inside of the tooth. Then, the dentist would use small files that can remove and clear any diseased or infected pulp. The dentists would then make sure that there won’t be any remaining pulp by washing the inside of the tooth with water.
  • Gutta-percha is used after making sure that the inside of the tooth is properly cleaned and dried. The gutta-percha would act as the filling in the cleaned canal to properly seal it. The dentist would then apply a temporary filling to close the tooth while waiting for the temporary crown to be placed.
  • Few weeks after the root canal, the dentist would finish the treatment by placing a permanent crown that looks like the natural teeth. Depending on the status of the tooth structure, a post may be placed inside the root chamber to support the crown and support it’s stability properly.
